In the basic job doc genre for untenured (ie assistant professor, instructor, visiting assistant professor, postdoc, clinical, and every other variety of non-tenure track positions), I work on cover letters, CVs, teaching statements, research statements, diversity statements, service statements, dissertation abstracts, and syllabi (I do other documents, and these are explained below). And yet, misunderstanding of its proper organization, form, and principles is rampant. Have you read my post, “Dr. Karen’s Rules of the CV”? ACADEMIC RESEARCH STATEMENT

Research Statement Review — $180 standard rate/$220 tenured rate/$250 advanced tenured rate.   In this review I ask you to compose a concise, 2-page version of your research statement (Tenured Research Statements may go beyond the 2-4 pages I specify in the materials.  While I still edit for brevity in ALL cases, the simple length of your career may mean that you go to 3-5 pages.) that focuses entirely on the facts of your academic research and jettisons emotionalism and any narratives of your research process, the two greatest pitfalls of this genre. You will focus on what you researched, concluded, and published, and what you’ll be doing next, with a brief statement of its contribution to the field. If you want to work on multiple grants, I’ll also inquire how much recycling or overlap you think is possible between the applications, and reduce the cost accordingly. Postdoctoral Fellowship Application Materials

I edit Job Talks taking into account both general presentation principles as well as any specific instructions you have been given.  I read for professionalism of approach, clarity and organization, persuasiveness, quality of evidence and argumentation, balance of data and theory, and soundness of conclusion.  A Job Talk edit requires two hours at $200/hour, plus a reduced RUSH fee of $100 = $500.  This covers two drafts of edits of your job talk. The tenured rate, as above, is $220/hour.
